Why We Started Traveling Small
A little manifesto for going far without going big — and what you can expect to find here.
The first trip that changed my mind about travel wasn’t to anywhere impressive. It was a long weekend in a borrowed camper van, parked at the edge of a town so small it didn’t have a stoplight. I remember thinking I’d be bored. Instead, I slept better than I had in months, learned the name of the woman who ran the only coffee shop, and watched the fog burn off a valley I’d never have found on a bigger itinerary.
That’s the whole idea behind Traveling Small. Somewhere along the way, travel got tangled up with more — more miles, more stops, more square footage, more stuff. But the trips that stay with us are rarely the biggest ones. They’re the slow mornings, the wrong turns that turned out right, and the small places most people drive straight past.
What you’ll find here
We write about four things, mostly. Destinations worth the detour — the small towns and quiet coastlines. Travel tips for packing light and planning smart. Small-space living in RVs, vans, and tiny cabins, because how you travel shapes what you notice. And stories from the road, for the days you can’t get out but want to feel like you did.
None of it requires a big rig or a big budget. That’s rather the point.
So pull off the highway for a minute. Stay a while. There’s more to see when you’re traveling small.
